Rev. Gideon N. Judd’s historical sketch of the Presbyterian Church of Bloomfield, now known as the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green, stands as a timeless testament to faith and community.

Published in 1835 by K. Kellogg of New York under the title “Historical Sketch, Confession of Faith, and Catalogue of Members, of the Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield, N.J.,” this seminal work offers a captivating journey into the annals of a burgeoning congregation.

At the outset of this enlightening volume, Rev. Judd acknowledges his sources, drawing from the rich tapestry of the church’s narrative:

“Of the Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, from the time of its organization, to April 15th, 1834, prepared from the Records of the Presbytery by which it was organized, the Records of the Church, and information obtained from the oldest members then living, by Rev. Gideon N. Judd.”

While the historical sketch meticulously recounts the formative years of the church, it is the catalogue of members that offers a treasure trove for family historians and genealogists alike.

This catalogue grants a rare glimpse into the lives of individuals who shaped the fabric of Bloomfield in the 1830s, many of whom hail from the town’s earliest founding families.

Names such as Baldwin, Ball, Cadmus, Crane, Dodd, and Ward resonate throughout Bloomfield’s history, some tracing their lineage back to the pioneering settlers of Newark in 1666.

Now we present the names enshrined in Rev. Judd’s Catalogue of Members, immortalizing their enduring legacy within the long history of the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green.

Early African American Members

Among the parishioners were members of the early African American community living in Bloomfield and what is now Montclair.

One person on this list, Delilah Howe, shares a surname with James Howe, a formerly enslaved man who was freed in 1817. His home on Claremont Avenue in Montclair is now being restored and maintained by Friends of the Howe House, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
